MultiPrint provides print routing for z/VM and z/VM/VSE environments, allowing printer sharing and extended operator control. MultiPrint is a single virtual printer to serve everyone on your system.
MultiPrint Highlights
MultiPrint is the total solution for print management. All your printers – from VM terminal printers to SNA and LAN laser printers – can be reached from applications in VM, VSE, VM/VTAM.
MultiPrint includes unique and powerful laser printer support and allows use of all laser print capabilities without altering the programs that create printed output.
A new interface to Novell’s HostPrint allows mainframe-generated reports to be distributed to a Novell LAN print queue for local printing.
MultiPrint Specifications
MultiPrint/VM runs on:
- IBM System/390 or compatible mainframe.
- IBM VM/ESA 2.1.0 or greater.
- CMS 7.0 or greater in 370 or ESA mode.
- 50 cylinders of 3380 DASD disk space or its equivalent, on two minidisks (40 cylinders on one minidisk, 10 on another).
Print 3270 Output from Guest Machines
MultiPrint/VM includes an option to collect data sent to the 3270 port by CICS transactions. A separate MultiPrint/VM service machine dials into the port with VM’s logical device support facility. It then moves the data into a CP spool file and periodically routes that file to the main MultiPrint/VM machine.
Select and Print Reports from VSE/POWER
The MultiPrint/VM Extract Facility selects VSE/POWER queue reports that match criteria you define, then transfers them to MultiPrint/VM for printing. As a result, VSE printing looks the same as any other VM print output. The Extract Facility is a CICS program with five transactions; startup and shutdown can be automatic.
Service Machines
MultiPrint/VM requires one virtual service machine with 8 to 16 Mg virtual memory for installation, operation, and maintenance. This machine formats data and drives printers.
You might also use up to two additional service machines, at least 3 Mg of memory each, for these options:
- Operating in an SNA environment.
- Printing 3270 output from guest machines.
- Additional virtual machines may access MultiPrint/VM via its operator interface.
Simple, Secure Operation
The full-screen, menu-driven, GUI interface serves multiple users. It includes security and printer-domain options; it provides context-sensitive help; and it can be customized.
The operator interface also provides reports of print management information: equipment status, report queue information, print operations history, and operator actions.
The operator interface is the usual source of commands, but commands can also be issued from the service machine where MultiPrint/VM is installed or from some other virtual machine via CP SMSG.
For security, each MULTI-PRINT/VM command is associated with one of six privilege levels. Also, individual users can be assigned access to specific printers and denied access to others.
Installation:
- Create user directory entries for the MultiPrint/VM service machines and format their minidisks.
- Load MultiPrint/VM from tape, insert the product code, and tailor the startup execs.
- Create operator IDs.
- Configure printers and operator domains.
- Configuration can be changed later without cycling down the service machine.
